KC STAAR Action Team
Meeting Held November 19
November 19, 2008
The KC STAAR (Keokuk County Schools
Tactics for Alcohol Abuse Reduction) group had an action team
meeting at Pekin High School November 19. Students, teachers, and
administrators from Sigourney, Keota, Tri-County, and Pekin, as
well as Project Director Lynne Zoulek and other community resource
people, met to discuss partnerships and future activities. KC STAAR
and YSAP (Youth Substance Abuse Prevention) will hold joint
meetings and work together on initiatives designed to prevent
adolescent substance abuse.
At the meeting each school shared Red Ribbon Week activities that
had been done and discussed ways to improve observance of Red
Ribbon Week in the future. Other updates were shared as well, such
as the completion of an informational brochure, ongoing work on a
website, and a staff position to be filled. One upcoming project is
Project Sticker Shock, which will have group members placing
stickers on alcoholic beverages in area retailers, reminding adults
that it is illegal to supply alcohol to minors.
Other issues pertinent to schools and teen life were discussed,
too. Ads in school magazines subscriptions were discussed. Many
sports magazines contain ads for alcoholic beverages, for example.
The group will continue to post the Stall Street Journal, which
contains facts about adolescent alcohol consumption and its
dangers. School board policies addressing substance abuse education
will also be considered.
If you would like additional information about the KC STAAR grant
and its functions, please contact a school administrator from one
of the participating schools or Lynne Zoulek
(lynne.zoulek@sigourneyschools.com).
