MINUTES

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

 

June 22, 2009

 

HEARING

 

            A public hearing was held in the board room/media center of the Pekin Community School on June 22, 2009, at 12:00 p.m. on the construction of a new bus barn.  Board members present were: Copeland, Hollingsworth, Millikin, Van Voorst and Winn.  Absent: Adam and Bennett.  Also present were: Craig Wiggins, Matt Brant, Karen Sherman, Dan Sorrell, Jeff Eeling, Dr. Macklem and Connie Linney.   President Hollingsworth called the hearing to order and acknowledged a quorum.  There was no public present for discussion.  Millikin moved to adjourn the public hearing.  Van Voorst seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.  The time was 12:10 p.m.

 

 

A public hearing was held in the board room/media center of the Pekin Community School on June 22, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. on the construction of a playground system.  Board members present were: Copeland, Hollingsworth, Millikin, Van Voorst and Winn.  Absent: Adam and Bennett.  Also present were: Craig Wiggins, Matt Brant, Karen Sherman, Dan Sorrell, Jeff Eeling, Dr. Macklem and Connie Linney.   President Hollingsworth called the hearing to order and acknowledged a quorum.  There was no public present for discussion.  Millikin moved to adjourn the public hearing.  Copeland seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.  The time was 12:10 p.m.

 

SPECIAL MEETING

 

The Pekin Community School Board met in special session of June 22, 2009, at 1:34 p.m. in the board room/media center of the Pekin Community Schools.  Board members present were: Copeland, Hollingsworth, Millikin, Van Voorst and Winn.  Absent: Adam and Bennett.  Also present were: Craig Wiggins, Matt Brant, Karen Sherman, Dan Sorrell, Jeff Eeling, Dr. Macklem and Connie Linney.  

 

            President Hollingsworth called the meeting to order and acknowledged a quorum.

 

            Bids were opened for the bus barn: Custom Building of Tipton - $137,271; Greiner Buildings of Washington - $138,222.31; D & B Construction of Bloomfield $142,700; and W-3 Construction of Washington - $116,565.56.

 

            Van Voorst moved to accept the bid from W-3 Construction for $116,565.56.  We would do the removal of concrete ourselves.  Millikin seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

            Matt Brant of Boland Recreation of Marshalltown gave a presentation on their plans for the playground with a bid of $146,092.

 

            Karen Sherman of National Playground Compliance Group of Carlisle gave a presentation on their plans for the playground with a bid of $139,000.

 

Winn moved to accept the bid from National Playground Compliance Group of Carlisle.  Copeland seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.

           

Millikin moved to ratify the contract with Paula Pollock as 3-5 special education teacher and middle school cheerleading sponsor.  Copeland seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

Copeland moved to ratify the contract with Jenny Hahn as K-2 special education teacher and junior class sponsor.  Winn seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

Millikin moved to ratify the contract with Brandi Schweitzer as special education teacher for Brandon Campbell.  Winn seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

Dan Sorrell of Sorrell Glass discussed the retrofit of the patio doors to windows.  They will replace 28 windows (material and labor) for $49,784. 

 

Van Voorst moved to purchase the 28 windows from Sorrell Glass.  Copeland seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

Winn moved to table discussion on the installation of fire alarm strobes until a later date.  Copeland seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

Winn moved to adjourn the meeting.  Millikin seconded.  The motion carried unanimously.  The time was 2:19 p.m.
