CLIMB THEATRE COMING TO PEKIN

February 26, 2010

Background

CLIMB Theatre’s plays are research-based, and responsibly written to achieve specific educational objectives.  They are also excellent theatre—that’s what makes them so effective as education.

CLIMB hires great directors and fine designers, and they audition over 2,000 actors before choosing the seventeen who will comprise our Performing Company.  Performing in ensembles of three to four actors, each diverse cast brings its own sets, props and costumes directly into school gyms, multi-purpose rooms, and auditoriums.  Prior to each performance, CLIMB mailed the school one copy of their free teacher activity and discussion guide and a copy of a take-home newsletter for parents.  The take-home newsletter describes CLIMB, the play their children saw, and activities parents can do with their children.

CLIMB PLAYS

CLIMB Theatre will be presenting various plays on the 4th of March at Pekin Community Schools.  The following topics will be covered:

K-2 students will see the play Rude Rudy Roo that focuses on respect.  The characters will help the students learn to stand up for themselves and each other.  Rudy is a kangaroo who is having a terrible day.  His best friend, Edgar Elephant, ruined the picture he made for his mom and called him a bad name, for no reason at all.

3-5 students will see the play Snapshots that focuses on respect.  The character will uncover an unsolved mystery at his new school.  He tries to discover what Lake Stanley Elementary is a not-so-pleasant place to be.

6-8 students will see the play Lockdown that focuses on harassment.   Todd the character is surrounded by gossip, rumors, insults and fights at school.  Todd prefers to keep his head down and hopes nobody notices him.

CLIMB Classes

CLIMB Theatre’s classes are made up of age-appropriate activities and scenes that either teach an important lesson or provoke new thoughts about an issue that kids deal with every day.  Classes are research-based and responsibly written to achieve specific educational objectives.  They also provide an opportunity for creativity, play and fun—which is part of what makes them effective education.

9-12 students will see mini dramas focusing on substance abuse and making wise decisions in life.  These mini drama classes will be presented in the English classrooms and students will rotate to the rooms through out the day.

Pekin Community School District would like to thank the DECAT Board and other organizations for donating the funding for this program.  Without their support this would not have been possible.
