Home Schooling

by Dave Harper

August 04, 2009

Dear Parent/ Guardian:

The time has come to register for the next academic home school year. Home schooled students in the Pekin District have three options:

1. No involvement with the school. Families choosing to have no involvement with the school district will need to complete and submit Form A.

2. Dual Enrollment. By choosing this option, home schooled students may enroll in academic programs or extracurricular activities. If fees are charged to public school students, a fee may be charged for the class or activity. Dual enrolled students do not have to pay the cost of the annual or courtesy assessment. See the enclosed Notification to Parents about the Annual Assessment.

3. Home School Assistance Program (HSAP). This option provides families with a district-provided licensed instructor to supervise home instruction at least 4 times per quarter in which half of the contacts must be face-to-face with the child. Children enrolled in the HSAP are not required to be assessed annually but must show adequate progress.
Parents need to submit two copies of Form A for each child by the first day of school, August 26, 2009.
See the instructions for completing this form in the handbook. In order to be a complete document, items 1-6 must be completed, and parent/guardian must sign Form A. Please deliver or mail these forms to the attention of Dave Harper, Pekin Community Schools, 1062 Birch Ave, Packwood, IA 52580

This year’s Form A asks you to outline your course of study on a separate page and to attach your lesson plans. Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade need to report plans of instruction for reading, language arts, and mathematics. Students 6th through 12th grade need to report plans of instruction and lesson plans for reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. These are academic subjects use to determine if adequate progress is made by the home schooled student.

If you need to enroll in dual enrolled classes, please contact Linda Harms for scheduling these classes. Public school begin classes on Wednesday, August 26.  Dual Enrolled students who attend classes need to complete an emergency contact form, submit Form A, and pay course fees for dual enrolled classes. If you are in need of district “available” textbooks, please refer to the CPI Handbook.

If your child is currently identified as a child requiring special education, a hearing must be held with the IEP team prior to being approved for CPI. These meetings will be scheduled by the home school coordinator so please contact Joel Illian for available times.

The  annual assessment testing tentative dates are March 22-26, 2010 will be offering to our home school students. If you are choosing the portfolio evaluation or standardized testing option for your annual assessment, please complete this form and return with your Form A. If you are served by a supervising teacher or are a certified parent/teacher and wish to take the test as a “courtesy assessment”, please also complete the form so that test materials can be ordered. Further information about specific testing dates and times will be mailed in January.
Please read the FERPA Parent Notification form regarding your child’s education records, and if necessary, respond with your written reply.
