4th Grade News
In between snow days, 4th graders have been quite busy. In English, each student has been writing their own life story. Interesting information in each story included: birth, family, friends, pets, memorable moments, and future goals. An oral presentation will complete the project.
During the 2010 Winter Olympics, English students concluded a study of adjectives with their own “Adjective Olympics” which consisted of many challenging events. Two of the students’ favorites involved the use of technology. One of those was a Promethean Board task and the other was an e-mail project.
In the 4th grade math classes we have been spending the winter doing multi-step multiplication and division. Our Accelerated Math and Skills Iowa programs are becoming a regular part of the students’ math curriculum.
In science, the 4th graders have been measuring items using the Metric System. In March we will turn our attention to natural disasters.
In reading class the 4th graders have been studying nonfiction material. February is Black History month. The students read a story about Thurgood Marshall and learned his influence on stopping school segregation. Then the students were given a list of over 30 influential African Americans and asked to chose one based on their own interest to learn about.
Now that February is coming to a close, the 4th graders are beginning a rainforest unit to tie in with the story The Great KapokTree. Not only do the students learn about various aspects of the rain- forest, but they also will build a mock rainforest in Mrs. Scholtus’s classroom to perform the readers’ theater of our story for the younger students.
