Spanish Classes Celebrate El Día de los Muertos

Lots of things have been happening around the Spanish program these past few weeks.  On Monday, October 31st the Spanish classes celebrated the Day of the Dead.  This is an Hispanic holiday that combines elements of Memorial Day and the idea of Life and Death (mortality) into one.  Each level of Spanish helped contribute to the atmosphere in the room by completing a different craft or activity that reviewed their Spanish along with the Hispanic culture.  The lights were turned off to simulate night time and the students enjoyed tasting tostadas, Mexican cookies, Cactus and Salsa.  Each level learned a little something different about the activities throughout Mexico and Central America that surround the ancient holiday.  Spanish III and IV learned about some of the celebrations that take place right here in the United States in areas with large populations of Hispanics.  Some of the students painted their faces and others wore masks as we talked, listened to music and got a feel for the importance of the holiday to those that celebrate it.  Students created an Ofrenda (display) at the back of the room that had representation from the major elements associated with the holiday.  Skeletons were given names and used as a writing activity in Spanish I to help represent those remembered and Papel Picado, Calaveras y Flores were created by students to set the mood.
