Middle School Math News
January 2012
All Middle School Math Students are working on ways to improve their problem solving skills. Weekly assignments are given online through a website called Edmodo. Students follow a rubric to help them successfully understand and answer correctly daily life problems. Problem topics revolve around material we are covering during that week in class.
Edmodo Math Rubric
- What strategy did you use to solve the math problem?
- What steps did you use to solve the problem?
- Show the work.
- Label the problem.
I have included some of the weekly questions that your students have solved. Many students use their Active Inspire Tool to show work and graph problems.
Grade 8- Example-Pythagorean Theorem
Ricardo plots the points (0,0) and (6,0) and (0,8). Then he connects the points to form a right triangle. What is the length of the triangle’s hypotenuse?
Example by Allison Lankford.

Grade 7-Example-Positive and Negative Integers
Brad’s Checking Account
Brad had $530.45 in his checking account. He wrote checks for $16.50 and $95.68. He also made a deposit of $19.13. What is the final balance in his account?
Example by Aspen Clark

Grade 6 -Example-Perimeter
Jerome’s Metal Strips-Perimeter
Jerome uses metal strips to make rectangular frames that are 8 inches long and 4 inches wide. What is the total length of the metal needed to make 5 frames?
Example by Ethan Cooksey
1.I drew a picture.
2.I drew and labeled it 8 inches long and 4 inches Then I found the perimeter of that rectangle by taking 8+8+4+4.This gave me the total inches for 1 frame which was 24 inches. I then took 24x5 to give me the total inches for 5 frames.
3.8+8+4+4=24 inches
24x5=120 inches
4.120 inches
