Elementary Physical Education
The students were very excited to try the climbing wall.  They did a great job last week and thoroughly enjoyed their first climb!  They were able to use their strength, agility, balance, thinking skills, and determination to try to reach the wall from side to side.   Many positive comments were made during the week and they are really looking forward to getting back on the wall next fall.
Physical Education students have been awfully busy completing fitness testing and have begun to go out to the track for practice.
The track and field day will be on Monday, May 20th.  The K-1-2 students will perform at 8:30 followed by the 3-4-5 students at 10:00.  The K-1-2 students will be divided into groups to run the 200 dash, the 100 dash, compete in the long jump, and the softball or football throw.  Ribbons for each event will be handed out in the afternoon on May 20th.
The 3-4-5 students will compete in the softball/football  throw, the 100 dash, the long jump, and the 200 or 400 dash.  They will complete the competition with a class 4 X 100 relay.
The students are taught all events in track and field by the end of 5th grade so they can see that this sport has something for everyone.  Pekin Middle School and the High School have a great tradition of competing very well in the sport of track and field and have always had many students going out and representing the school well.
Any student turning 9 yrs. Old by Dec. 31, 2013 is able to participate in the Hershey Track Meet in Fairfield on May 21.  Letters have been sent home referring to this meet.  Anyone who is interested should be in Fairfield by 5:30 on Tuesday the 21st.
The meet is held at the Fairfield High School track.  This meet is free to all students ages 9-14.  Events are listed on the registration sheet.  If you have any questions concerning this meet please call me at the school.
I have attached pictures of students climbing on our new wall.  This is a great addition to our Physical Education curriculum.
Remember to exercise as a family.  Enjoy your summer with your children, stay healthy, be safe, and always keep everyone moving!!  60 minutes of exercise daily is recommended and will keep your child in good shape.
See you in the fall!
