Mrs. Mottet's Winter Newsletter
Spring is just around the corner! I am happy to be back after a 7 week maternity leave. I have resumed my regular counseling duties and am looking forward to a great rest of the school year!
In January I introduced a new topic to students called growth mindset. Growth mindset is a hot topic in the school counseling domain because it points out that intelligence is not fixed; meaning, all children have the capacity to grow and learn even if things are difficult. In fact, challenging their brains help them develop in a positive way! We also discussed problem solving and coping skills. The 4th and 5th graders discussed perseverance as it relates to growth mindset. And since January ushered in a new president, K-3 grades discussed being the president as their monthly job trait.
February in guidance is gearing up for Iowa Assessments. In guidance students are learning about time management and following directions. Both of these skills correlate to test taking for Iowa Assessments but also for tests students take in the future. More topics on test preparation will be discussed in the time leading up to Iowa Assessments.
As always, please look for their monthly guidance packets at the end of each month. I encourage parents to discuss with their child the topics they’ve been learning about in guidance. I am still meeting with individual students so if you or your child would like to talk to me please contact me at email@example.com.
