Pekin Construction Update
I want to give our community an update on the construction going on at Pekin this summer. The staff and board have been working with SPVA Architecture firm to develop plans for our entrances to the school, lagoon upgrades and Junior High addition.
Entrances - We were hoping start construction on the entrances for the elementary and high school this fall. We have decided to move this phase of construction to the spring of 2018 and we will bid the entrances with the JH addition. Below are the reasons why we are moving construction of the entrances to the spring.
- The construction market is extremely busy and there is a good chance that a bid in August or this fall would yield less than desired bid participation and/or competitive prices. Combining the work and bidding in January/February of 2018 will yield better bids.
- There are issues with the soil that need to be addressed and could potentially add costs to the project. A well thought out plan will result in the best outcome.
- There are long lead items in the first phase work that could push the exterior work into the winter resulting in added cost for winter conditions.
- The added time will allow the District, SVPA and Carl A. Nelson & Company to spend more time in review and looking for cost saving solutions.
The bottom line is that we feel we can get a better bang for our buck if we wait till the spring. There is a lot we want to get done and this will allow us to stretch our dollars to accomplish more.
Lagoon - The DNR is involved and the permitting process could take up to 6 months. We are looking at starting construction in June 2018.
JH Addition/Science and Food and Consumer Science Rooms - Staff and board are looking at rough draft plans for the new addition and the room upgrades. The architect will develop concept sketches that we will share with the community and we are planning on putting these projects out for bid in the December timeframe.
High School Locker Rooms - The board asked the architect to bring other options for the locker room remodel. This project will be included in the December bid package.
We did expand the parking lot at the daycare due to the number of parents using our facility. This will improve the flow of traffic and make it safer for children as they are dropped off or picked up. We are not using Bond funds to pay for this project.
We have a lot going on at the school this summer. We have removed all of the asbestos so we could install new ceiling tile and lighting in the classrooms in the high school. The band room will be getting new carpet and a storage loft above the offices. We will have new lockers installed in the high school and a new tile in the commons area. The wrestling room is taking shape and will be completed by October. All of these projects above are being accomplished because our community invested into our school by passing the bond issue.
We will have an open house in the near future to allow our community to come see how we are using their tax dollars. I want to thank you for your tremendous support of our school district.
