Elementary P.E. Update

Every year in physical education class my students participate in the Healthiest State Initiative Walk. The Healthiest State Initiative Walk is an annual walk done by communities, schools, organizations, institutions, individuals and schools to improve their health and happiness, and ultimately achieve the goal of Iowa being the healthiest state in America. Last year my students had the opportunity to join in on the obstacle course I provided. This year I made a nature scavenger hunt. The students were put into groups and we walked around outside to find different things in the environment. The students had a fun time finding interesting things like beautiful rocks, unusual sticks, something they thought was treasure, and even an apple tree! The apple tree was a hit! The students were able to taste and try the two different apple trees on our campus.  These next couple of weeks the students will be starting their new fitness testing called FitnessGram. FitnessGram is a little different than the older version that was called Presidential Physical Fitness Testing. FitnessGram has a couple different tests and changes up some of the older tests. The students will be able to write down goals and look back on those goals to see if they have improved.  Kindergarten – 2nd grade will be working on locomotors, general space awareness, and throwing and catching.
