As we start another school year, we reflect on what it means for a teacher to be passionate, creative, and dedicated.  A teacher’s “work day” is considered to be 7:45-3:45, however if you have ever driven by Pekin, outside of these times, you will see many dedicated teachers working hard for students.

Our Classroom Spotlight this week is on Ms. Kitzman.  If you look up the words: dedicated, passionate, & kindhearted, in the dictionary you could probably find a picture of Ms. Kitzman.  Ms. Kitzman teaches math by day and coaches several sports by night!

You might think...isn’t that her job? She gets paid to do that, right? True...her job is to teach math and coach, however there are so many little things that Ms. Kitzman contributes to your child’s everyday life.  Ms. Kitzman spends a tremendous amount of extra time helping students to be successful in school.  She not only helps students in her class...but also previous students from other classes.  She sets high expectations for academics and behavior and is respected by students and staff members.

When we asked students what they liked most about Ms. Kitzman they responded with, “She is always nice and explains how to do the math.”, “She helps us before and after school if we don’t understand how to do something.”, “She’s understanding and helps us stay organized.”

When you walk into Ms. Kitzman’s classroom you are likely to see students working collaboratively in groups.  Students have multiple resources to use during math, such as online tools, textbooks, posters, and their notebooks.  Ms. Kitzman likes to use hands-on activities that help students to relate math to their everyday life.

On top of teaching & coaching, Ms. Kitzman is also a PLC Leader for teachers.  This means that she is working with small groups of teachers to help them be successful.  She observes classrooms, analyzes data, and helps teachers plan engaging lessons.  “Kitz always takes an interest in her students and how they learn.”-Fellow Staff Member.  “Ms. Kitzman is always willing to help her colleagues, no matter what.” -Fellow Staff Member.

These are just a few of the reasons why Pekin is so lucky to have Ms. Kitzman on the Panther Crew.
