FOSS Kits & More
Welcome back! I hope everyone is feeling refreshed and recharged this new year. Exciting things are happening in science in first grade! You may or may not have heard your child telling you about something called a FOSS Kit. FOSS stands for Full Option Science System. The kits allow our students to study scientific topics in a variety of ways including investigation and experimentation. This provides the students with a much more engaging, and let’s face it, FUN approach to science! There are FOSS Kits for all different science topics and all different grade levels. In first grade, we’re doing one called Air and Weather, which has fun experiments like building parachutes, studying the phases of the moon, and becoming meteorologists. What’s nice is that all FOSS Kits are now aligned with our teaching standards, or simply what the students are supposed to know before moving on to the next grade level. The student’s grade on their report card will be a true indication of what the child knows and how they’re progressing towards meeting their expectations. This practice is called Standard Based Grading and is something the elementary is moving towards for all subjects, not just science. So, ask your child what they did in science today, they might just have an exciting story for you!
