Pekin represented at Eastern Iowa FCA Banquet
For the second year in a row, Pekin Community High School was represented by a pair of its teachers at the annual FCA banquet in Cedar Rapids. Tim Hadley and Joel Illian, Huddle Coaches of the local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, attended the event at the Cedar Rapids Marriott on the evening of Monday April 22 with their wives and several hundred others from across the state.
Speakers included former NFL player Aaron Kampman of the Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes, and former NFL coach Les Steckel. Kampman shared of his experiences in the NFL and under the tutelage of his high school coach, the legendary Ed Thomas of Aplington-Parkersburg. Steckel spoke of his time in the NFL as well as his longstanding relationship with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, including his experiences as President of the FCA.
For the second year in a row, the Pekin FCA chapter was mentioned and pictures were displayed during the evening’s events. “We were thrilled to see our kids’ pictures up there on the screen,”Illian said. “There were six or seven hundred people in attendance from all over Iowa, and there were only two or three schools mentioned by name during the presentations. Pekin was one of those two or three that were singled out for special recognition. We were very proud!”
The program featured the second annual Pekin FCA breakfast that took place soon after the students returned from Christmas. The breakfast had to be postponed until after Christmas due to bad weather just before Christmas break. The enormous turnout for the event caught the attention of the people who run FCA at the state level.
“It was a great evening,” Hadley added. “Having our students recognized in front of all those people was a real honor. It’s a testament to the great things our students at Pekin are doing.”
The event involved people associated with FCA from all across eastern Iowa, including a number of Huddle Coaches from high schools and colleges in the area. “We had a really nice meal and were privileged to meet some excellent folks from around the state who work with FCA,” said Hadley. “It gave us a great opportunity to share ideas with people from other FCA Huddles – to see what they are doing in their individual huddles and to share what were are doing at Pekin.”
“It was a very positive experience,” Illian agreed. “We hope to be able to go again next year. Hopefully our kids will do some things in the coming year that will help ensure Pekin is mentioned by name a third year in a row!”
Pekin’s FCA Huddle meets in the Pekin school library every school Friday at 7:15 in the morning. All are welcome to attend these student-led worship times.
