You Can Make a Difference in a Child's Life
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
IN A CHILD’S LIFE
Pekin Elementary School is looking for volunteers again this year to work with K-2 grade children who need a little extra attention. Volunteers in the “Friends of Education” program will read to a child or have a child read to them, play an educational game, or even help them put a puzzle together. All of these looking and listening activities will help develop or build language skills; this forms a solid foundation for later school success. The goal is to help the children realize their own self worth.
Volunteers are also needed to listen to first grade children read. Reading aloud expands a child’s vocabulary and is a wonderful way to share the joy of reading. It is one of the best ways to create a love for reading. The child who develops a love for reading gains a lifelong desire to read and learn. These volunteers are called “Popcorn Readers.”
Being a volunteer is a wonderful way to help the children in our community. Each of the programs begin the first part of October and continue through April. If you would like to participate in either the “Friends of Education” program or the “Popcorn Readers” program, please contact Michelle Glosser by emailing to michelle.glosser@pekincsd.org or by calling Pekin Elementary School at 319-695-3707 or 641-661-2351. You may ask for Michelle or you may leave a message with Diane Parcell, the elementary secretary. Please let us know which program you would be interested in, and we will contact you with further information.
