Elementary Counselor Update

Dear Pekin Elementary Family,

Classroom guidance for the first half of the year has focused on developing students skills for learning and fostering empathy for others. Students have learned that empathy is when you feel or understand how someone else is feeling. Every class has been able to practice recognizing how others are feeling by looking at someone’s body and face for clues and taking the other person’s perspective.

As we move through the rest of the year, students will learn about showing others compassion and kindness, accepting the differences between us, and how to handle strong feelings. Students will learn calming strategies such as breathing, counting, and using positive self-talk. These strategies can be used if the student is feeling nervous or angry. The end of the year will focus on learning problem solving steps to resolve problems in a positive way.

In addition to classroom guidance, 5th & 6th grade lunch bunch has started to provide additional opportunities for students to get to know others better. Three students from each grade are selected every Monday to participate. Students play games to get to know each other and work together as a team.

As your child’s shared school counselor, I will be available during parent teacher conferences held on Thursday, February 20 from 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Please contact me via email or phone to schedule an appointment for that evening. Please reach out if you have any questions. I can be reached at extension 238 or at abbey.shelman@pekincsd.org.

Thank you!

Abbey Shelman
