September School Counselor Update
September School Counselor Update
The year is off to a great start! It has been refreshing interacting with and getting to know all of the students. Our first classroom guidance lessons focused on the feelings we might have returning to school. We found out students were excited and worried about some of the same things! In our coming lessons, we will get to know our classmates and have a lesson on safety. The younger elementary will focus on safety at home and the older elementary will focus on safety on the internet.
In addition, I would like to highlight all of the great mental health services Pekin offers right inside their building. Lea Sieren and Jan Utterback are able to provide individual counseling to all Pekin students. In addition, Pekin has partnered with Grace C. Mae out of Washington to bring April Donelson, BHIS counselor, to Pekin one day a week. Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS) is a skill building program that helps children and teens learn to make healthy and positive choices. They work with children and families to build practical skills that improve day-to-day life including conflict resolution, social skills, communication skills, and ways to cope with frustration, fear, or anger. If you are interested in any of these services, please contact me at abbey.shelman@pekincsd.org.
