4th Grade News
Coming into fourth grade brings a new responsibility for the 50 students who are in the class of 2029. Each student has begun the journey of learning how to use a daily assignment planner. The assignment planner is used as a home-school communication tool to let parents know what the students are studying in classes as well as any homework that may be completed for the next day. They are also message areas for correspondence between parents and teachers. This is a great tool to help the students stay organized to ensure a successful fourth grade year.
In Reading class, we began the year with the “Power of Yet.” Adding that three letter word to the end of a negative statement can change our whole view of a challenge. Our brains can grow into wonderful muscles as long as we practice positivity and perseverance. We will continue to spiral back through positive self-talk and continue working on building and loving/caring classroom community. The classroom motto is “Don’t Stop Believing!” Then, the fourth graders started reading with the fictional story “Because of Winn Dixie.” They learned about using context clues, question-answer relationship comprehension strategy, understanding the point of view, and how flashbacks work within the story. Then using the Wonderopolis website they learned more about dogs and wrote summary paragraphs about their article. They are currently working on the story “The Great Kapok Tree.” The students are continuing their work with context clues and answering comprehension questions. Sequencing, story framing, author’s purpose, and learning how to write a story summary paragraph are the new skills added with this story.
In English the students have started a Writer’s notebook with many rules for writing being added and discussed. The students have been writing sentences to go along with spelling/phonics programs that are new this year. Plus this ties directly into the summary paragraph writing that we are doing in reading. They will be writing a persuasive letter next on saving the rainforest to tie in with “The Great Kapok Tree” story.
In Math the fourth graders will once again be using our “Everyday Math” series. This is an aggressive math program that should help our students reach a deeper understanding of math. Everyday Math has many activities and experiences to assist our students in their learning. We started this year with working on a basic number sense unit which included, place value, rounding, comparing numbers, addition & subtraction methods, and solving real world number stories. We are now starting to work with geometry, multiplication, and division.
The fourth graders also continue to use technology with Accelerated Reader, ConnectEd (Everyday Math), IXL Personal Learning Series and Skills Iowa. IXL is a great skill practice tool for students to use at home. The students username and password to this program can be found at the front of their planner.
In Science we are training our brains to think, write, draw, and teach like scientists, more specifically Energy Scientists and Electrical Engineers. We have been experimenting and creating series and parallel circuits. We are observing different components of a circuit and how they present energy through light, sound, or motion. We will continue our studies with magnetic energy, electromagnetism, energy transfer, and waves of energy.
