A Note from Mrs. Shelman- Elem. Guidance Couselor

Dear Pekin Elementary Family,

Classroom guidance throughout the month of October has focused on building positive relationships with peers, bullying, staying safe at home and at school, and identifying who a trusted adult is. Guidance lessons for the second and third quarters will focus on emotion identification and emotion management. Students will learn about and practice using these steps: stop, name your feelings, calm down. Students will also learn calming strategies such as breathing, counting, and using positive self-talk. These strategies can be used if the student is feeling nervous or angry.

In addition to classroom guidance, we have wonderful mental health resources available at Pekin. We are working with Grace C. Mae in Washington to have their Behavioral Health Intervention Services available during the school day at Pekin. We are also continuing our partnership with River Hills Community Health Center to make individual counseling services available during the school day at Pekin. In addition, Lea Sieren continues to provide individual counseling services to students of all ages.

As your child’s shared school counselor, I will be available to discuss your child or the various mental health services offered at Pekin during parent teacher conferences on:

  • Tuesday, November 3 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm (face to face)

  • Wednesday, November 4 from 1:45 pm - 7:00 pm (virtually)

Please contact me via email or phone to schedule a meeting during those times. If those do not work for you, I can accommodate a different time that fits your schedule. I can be reached at extension 238 or at abbey.shelman@pekincsd.org.

Thank you!

Abbey Shelman

Shared Elementary School Counselor
