6th Grade News Update
6th Grade Reading - In August, we read the story “ Stray” by Cynthia Rylant. In this story, we learned how to plot the story on a plot diagram to understand story vocabulary. Our goal of this story was to know what an antagonist and a protagonist is. We also learned that denotation is the meaning of the word and connotation means the feeling the word gives us when we read. In September, we read the story “Just Once” by Thomas Dygard. Our goal in this story was to understand what idioms were and apply our previous learned strategies to the story. In the month of October we are learning about the story devices flashback, foreshadowing, and suspense. We are applying this knowledge to the play that we are reading “The Hitchhiker” by Lucille Fletcher.
Math - Sixth grade has already finished unit one in Everyday Math and is halfway through unit two. In the first unit we learned about dot plots, finding mean, median, mode, and range, creating histograms, integers, and rational numbers. We recently just worked on greatest common factor, least common multiple, multiplying fractions, and dividing fractions. Now we are getting into ratios. The students love when we watch math videos to help them remember the math concepts we are working on.
Social Studies - We started the year off with Social Studies this year with our Iowa History and World Cultures units. During our Iowa History unit the students compared Iowa’s geography, climate, and natural resources to another country of their choice. They researched information and created a final project of a poster or slideshow presentation for their final grade. We are still currently working on our World Cultures unit. The students as a whole group along with myself created a slideshow about the United States of America and this week they spent researching other countries in North America. We are focusing on learning about different cultures and traditions in all areas of the world.
