6th Grade News Update

 

In reading class, we are working on reading short stories to practice our reading strategies. So far we have read fictional stories The Christmas Carol, Thank You Ma’am, and The Golden Cadallic and nonfiction articles Harlem Renissance, The Golden Age of Radio, and Too Much Sugar.  As the quarter is coming to an end, we are busy trying to make goals set for AR. In writing, we are brushing up on our skills to prepare us to write a persuasive essay.

In Social Studies class we have been working on Financial Literacy. Our 6th graders started this unit off with a future 25 year-old self project, then we learned about the difference between needs and wants, and how to budget their money. This is my first year teaching this unit but so far the students really seem to enjoy it! Every Monday we spend working on coding on code.org. This is also something that I am teaching for the first time. The kids LOVE coding and have been wonderful in helping me learn more about coding.

In math class, the 6th grade students have been working on solving problems with order of operations. The students like to remember the order of operations by listening to the song ‘Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally’. The Everyday Math series has also given the students a great introduction to algebraic expressions. If the students want to practice any of the skills we have been working on, they can log-in to the Everyday Math website or IXL. The Everyday Math website is https://my.mheducation.com/login, and their username and password are on Google classroom. IXL website https://www.ixl.com/signin/pekin.
