ISASP TIME! ISASP (Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress) will be held March 28-April 1. We encourage fifth graders to eat nutritiously and to get plenty of rest. Research shows that water is an important ingredient in academic achievement, so we are recommending that fifth graders bring some kind of water container with a lid to have at their desks during the tests. The containers can be filled with ice and water at school. No other beverages should be sent. They may also bring non electronic games to play during break times. We are also allowing students to chew peppermint gum during the test. Please do not send bubble gum or any other flavor. Peppermint, and the act of chewing, is said to promote brain activity. This may not be the case, but why not give it a try? *The number one way to improve your test scores is to have a positive attitude about the test. *Get a good nights sleep before taking the test. *Avoid worrying about the test. Keep in mind that you won’t know all the answers. Just do your best. Parents, don’t forget words of encouragement... They are often most important of all. Mrs. Book, Mrs. Reneker, Mrs. Wright

Certainly, we want to start this third grade article with a BIG THANK YOU to our students’ families for the help and support of their children during the culminating activities of “Traveling the Oregon Trail.” The creative costumes that many students have worn to “play” a role and the uniquely designed pioneer homes depicting their vision of what homes would have been like have been extremely impressive – much more than was expected or anticipated! After in-depth study and experiences with a computer simulation, students finally engaged in a live authentic simulation journeying the Oregon Trail. They chose a role, kept a daily diary, and made serious decisions that could be deciding life or death. They considered personal attributes of strength, common sense, hunting/fighting skills, negotiation skills and medical expertise. Of course, decisions concerning food and money were extremely important. Students also sampled foods similar to those the pioneers would have eaten like soda biscuits, johnnycakes, jerky, deer bologna, summer sausage, and oatmeal cookies. Unfortunately, some pioneers were lost along the trip, but everyone was engaged with the learning experience and can truly say enjoyed every minute of the adventure.

Fifth graders wrapped up the study of the Declaration of Independence with an escape room. Students had to collaborate and solve four different puzzles using clues during the process. It was an exciting way to review, and for them to work as a team to solve the puzzles.
